Welcome back to Listen Up! God Speaks—a podcast to help you live life victoriously. I’m your host, Charlotte, and you’re listening to Episode 5 of our series Victory Through the Battle: Spiritual Warfare Lessons from the Bible.

Each week, we’ve been diving into real battles in the Bible—some loud and visible, others deeply personal and private. Today, we’re stepping into one of the most mysterious and life-changing battles in all of Scripture.

Let’s dive into it together…

Have you ever been in a battle that wasn’t with someone else… but with yourself?

A moment where you felt caught between your past and your future, unsure of who you were and desperate for God to change something deep inside?

That’s exactly where Jacob finds himself in Genesis 32.

Let’s set the scene...

Jacob is preparing to meet his brother Esau for the first time in over 20 years. The last time they were together, Jacob had tricked Esau out of his birthright and blessing. Now, Jacob is terrified—he thinks Esau might still want to kill him.

He sends his family ahead and is left alone for the night.

And then something unexpected happens:

“And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day…” —Genesis 32:24

Jacob is pulled into a physical and spiritual struggle—a wrestling match with a divine being. Most scholars believe this was a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ.

But here’s the part I want to highlight:

This wasn’t just a fight. It was a transformational encounter.

Jacob didn’t wrestle to defeat God. He wrestled to be changed by God.

And that’s the first truth I want to share today:

Some battles in life are meant to break us free from who we were so we can step into who we’re becoming.

Let’s go deeper with the meaning of Jacob’s name...

The name Jacob in Hebrew is Yaakov [YAH-kov] means supplanter, deceiver, or one who grabs the heel.

It reflects the patterns of his life—manipulation, striving, always trying to get ahead.

But in this moment of wrestling, something changes.

God asks him:

“What is your name?” —Genesis 32:27

Now of course, God knew his name. But the question was for Jacob’s sake.

By saying “Jacob,” he was admitting who he had been.

And in response, God gives him a new name:

“Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” —Genesis 32:28

The name Israel means “God fights” or “one who wrestles with God.”

It was no longer about striving in his own strength—but learning to depend on God's power.

Let me ask you:

Are you in a season where God is wrestling the old identity out of you?
Are you facing a struggle that isn’t meant to destroy you—but to mark you?

Sometimes spiritual warfare is the process of surrendering the identity you built—and receiving the one God ordained.

Let me give you a real-life example...

A woman who’s always been “the fixer” in her family finally reaches the end of herself. She’s overwhelmed, burned out, and tired of trying to be strong for everyone else.

One night in prayer, she breaks. She tells God, “I can’t carry this anymore.”

And in that moment, God whispers to her spirit:

“You were never meant to. Let Me be your strength.”

That’s a wrestling moment.

It’s not defeat—it’s surrender. And surrender is where the transformation begins.

Let’s talk strategy...

Here are three lessons from Jacob’s wrestling match that apply to our spiritual warfare today:

1. God Will Wrestle You in the Dark

Jacob was alone when the battle began.
And oftentimes, our deepest breakthroughs come in the quiet, dark places—when no one sees us, when no one is cheering us on.

But God meets us there. He confronts us lovingly—not to punish us, but to reshape us.

So if you’re in a dark season… don’t panic.
You might be in the middle of your transformation.

2. Surrender Is Not Weakness—it’s Power

Jacob refused to let go, even when his hip was dislocated.

“I will not let you go unless You bless me.” —Genesis 32:26

There’s a kind of holy stubbornness God wants from us.
Not prideful striving, but desperate pursuit.

When we hold onto Him, even when it hurts—that’s when everything changes.

3. The Limp Is a Mark of Victory

After the encounter, Jacob walks away with a limp.

And here’s the thing:
He was weaker in the flesh—but stronger in the spirit.

He was marked by the encounter.

Some of your “limps”—those weaknesses, wounds, or scars—are reminders that God met you, wrestled with you, and brought you through.

Don’t hide your limp. It’s proof of your victory.

Let’s speak a declaration together…

I am not who I used to be. God is transforming me. I surrender my past identity, my striving, and my fear. I receive the name He gives me. Even if I walk with a limp, I will walk in victory. I am marked by His presence and strengthened by His grace.

Let’s pray...

Father, thank You for wrestling with me when I resist You.
Thank You for loving me enough to confront what needs to change.
I surrender my old patterns, my old labels, and my old identity.
Give me the strength to hold on to You, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Mark me with Your presence. Change my name. Shape my walk.
Let me come out of this season stronger in spirit, closer to You, and walking in my true identity.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before we close, if today’s message resonated with where you are—if you’re wrestling with identity, surrender, or breakthrough—don’t walk through it alone.
