Welcome back to Victory Through the Battle—a podcast to help you live life victoriously.

I’m your host Charlotte Barton and today’s episode may challenge the way we think about worship.
Because not all worship pleases God…
And not all fire comes from heaven.

We’re going into Leviticus chapter 10—the sobering account of Nadab and Abihu, two priests who brought what Scripture calls “unauthorized fire” before the Lord.

This isn’t just an Old Testament warning.
This is a spiritual lesson for believers today.

Because the enemy doesn’t always try to stop worship—
Sometimes he corrupts it.

SETTING THE CONTEXT

Let’s set the scene.

Aaron has just been consecrated as High Priest.
The tabernacle is complete.
God’s glory has visibly appeared.
Fire from the Lord has already fallen once—consuming the offering on the altar.

God gave very specific instructions for how He was to be approached.

Then we read this in Leviticus 10:

Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.” (Leviticus 10:1–2, ESV)

Let that settle for a moment.

They were priests.
They were anointed.
They were worshiping.

But God had not commanded what they did.

WHAT IS “STRANGE FIRE”?

Some translations call it strange fire.
Others say unauthorized fire.

The Hebrew implies fire that did not originate from God’s altar.

In other words:

  • Right activity

  • Wrong source

  • Wrong authority

They used their own fire instead of God’s fire.

This is critical for spiritual warfare and daily victory.

Because the enemy cannot create holy fire—but he can imitate spiritual activity without God’s authorization.

WORSHIP WITHOUT OBEDIENCE IS DANGEROUS

Here’s the hard truth:

Worship divorced from obedience becomes dangerous.

Nadab and Abihu weren’t rebelling openly.
They weren’t worshiping idols.
They weren’t refusing to serve.

They were worshiping—but on their own terms.

And that’s where many believers get tripped up today.

We live in a culture that prioritizes:

  • Emotional experience over obedience

  • Expression over submission

  • Passion over instruction

But God is not looking for creative worship—He is looking for commanded worship and with pure heart..

WHY THIS IS A SPIRITUAL WARFARE ISSUE

Let’s make this clear:

The enemy loves unauthorized worship.

Why?

Because it:

  • Feels spiritual

  • Looks passionate

  • Sounds anointed
…but lacks heaven’s authority and doesn’t come forth from the heart.

When worship is disconnected from obedience to God and His Word, it no longer functions as a weapon.

True worship:

  • Drives out darkness

  • Invites God’s presence

  • Strengthens spiritual authority

But strange fire does the opposite.
It leaves people exposed while thinking they’re covered.

AARON’S SILENCE & GOD’S WARNING

After the judgment, Moses speaks a powerful word:

This is what the LORD has said: ‘Among those who are near Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’”
And Aaron held his peace
.” (Leviticus 10:3)

Aaron didn’t argue.
He didn’t protest.
He didn’t defend his sons.

Why?

Because God was protecting the holiness of His presence.

Then God gives this warning to the priests:

You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean.” (Leviticus 10:10)

This is a warfare mandate.

Discernment protects worship. Discernment in your life increases as you spend time with the Lord daily in prayer, worship, and reading the Bible.

MODERN-DAY STRANGE FIRE

Let’s bring this home.

Strange fire today looks like:

  • Worship that ignores repentance

  • Worship to appear spiritual

  • Spiritual activity without submission to God’s Word

  • Chasing manifestations instead of God’s presence

  • Elevating feelings above obedience

  • Calling everything “God” without testing the source

Not everything spiritual is holy.

Not every fire is from heaven.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR WORSHIP PURE

Here are three spiritual warfare safeguards:

1. Worship God His way, not yours

Obedience fuels holy fire.

2. Stay anchored in Scripture

God never contradicts His Word.

3. Prioritize reverence over relevance

God is not impressed by performance—He responds to surrender and true worship from the heart.

JESUS: OUR HOLY FIRE

Here’s the good news.

We don’t approach God through incense and altars anymore.
We approach Him through Jesus Christ.

Jesus is:

  • Our perfect offering

  • Our authorized access

  • Our holy fire

When we worship through Him—with humility, obedience, and reverence— we don’t face judgment.
We experience victory.

DECLARATION

I choose obedience over emotion.
I choose reverence over routine.
I refuse strange fire in my life.

I worship God in spirit and in truth.
I submit my praise, my prayers, and my life to God’s authority.
Let God’s holy fire burn in me—pure, powerful, and pleasing to Him.

PRAYER

Lord,
Search our hearts.
Remove anything that does not honor You.
Teach us how to worship You rightly—not casually, not carelessly, but reverently.

Let our worship be a weapon.
Let our obedience invite Your presence.
And let Your holy fire consume everything in us that does not belong.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
