Welcome back to Listen Up! God Speaks—a podcast to help you live life victoriously. I’m your host, Charlotte, and we’re continuing with Episode 9 in our series Victory Through the Battle: Spiritual Warfare Lessons from the Bible.

Today’s episode is all about posture. And I don’t mean how you’re sitting—I mean how you’re positioned spiritually when you’re in a battle.

Because sometimes, the victory isn’t won on the battlefield—it’s won on the hill of intercession.

Let’s talk about Moses, Joshua, and the Amalekites.

Let’s walk through this incredible moment.

Israel is attacked by Amalek, a tribe known for striking the weak and the weary—those lagging behind.

Moses sends Joshua to lead the troops in the valley. But Moses goes up on a hill with the staff of God in his hand, along with Aaron and Hur.

“Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.” —Exodus 17:11 (ESV)

Let that sink in…

The victory wasn’t determined by the sword in the valley—it was determined by the intercession on the hill.

Here’s the first warfare truth:

The spiritual posture of leadership and intercessors affects what happens in the battle.

This was Israel’s first military conflict after leaving Egypt.
But before they ever had trained soldiers, they had a praying prophet.

Moses’ uplifted hands represented dependence on God. His staff represented authority and covenant.

And when he got tired, Aaron and Hur stood beside him and held up his hands.

That’s what spiritual warfare looks like:
It’s partnership, prayer, and positioning.

Let’s take a look at the word Amalek...

In Hebrew, the name Amalek (עֲמָלֵק) can be associated with the root word meaning to toil or wear down.

Amalek’s strategy was always to attack from behind—to wear down, exhaust, and discourage.

That’s how the enemy works in your life too. He waits until you’re weary, isolated, or distracted—and then he strikes.

Satan works diligently to cause us to become weighted down with life’s busy schedule and struggles, making us physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted.

Let’s pause and ask:

  • Have you been feeling spiritually tired?

  • Have you been trying to win the battle in the valley without first covering it on the hill?

This story shows us that you may be fighting in the natural—but you win in the spiritual.

Let me give you a real-life example...

A woman is fighting for her marriage, working with counselors, doing all she can—but nothing is changing.

Then one day, she realizes she’s been trying to fix it all in the natural and hasn’t gone up on the “hill.”

She starts waking up early to pray over her home.
She fasts one day a week.
She speaks scripture out loud over her husband and children.

And breakthrough begins—not because she tried harder, but because she took her place in the Spirit.

These same breakthrough strategies apply to any situation we may face.

Dedication to prayer, fasting, declaring Scripture out loud through faith and the authority of Jesus Christ.

Here are three spiritual warfare strategies from Exodus 17:

1. Intercede from a Place of Authority

Moses stood on a hill, not because he was avoiding the fight, but because he understood elevation brings revelation.

When you go higher in the Spirit—in worship, in prayer, in the Word—you gain perspective.
You begin to pray with authority, not just emotion.

This is where declarations are powerful. You’re not begging—you’re enforcing what God already said.

2. Surround Yourself with Spiritual Support

Moses’ arms got tired. Even great leaders grow weary.

But Aaron and Hur didn’t let him fall—they stepped in and held him up.

You need people who will:

  • Intercede for you when you can’t pray

  • Speak truth over you when you feel weak

  • Stand beside you when the battle gets long

Who’s holding up your arms? And who are you holding up?

Spiritual warfare is not meant to be fought alone.

3. Write Down and Remember Your Victories

After the battle, the Lord said to Moses:

“Write this as a memorial in a book… for I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek.”

And Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my banner (Yahweh-Nissi). —Exodus 17:14–15

Yahweh-Nissi fights your battles as you stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.

He is your banner, your defender, and your victory.

Don’t forget your victories, or discount even the little victories in life.
Document what God has done.
Declare His faithfulness over your future battles.

Every win is a testimony—and every testimony is a weapon.

Let’s declare this together:

“I lift up my hands in faith. I take my place on the hill of intercession. I will not fight alone. I declare victory over every Amalek that comes to wear me down. The Lord is my banner. He fights for me, and I will not be defeated.”

Let’s agree in prayer...

Father, thank You for showing me that the battle is not just physical—it is spiritual.
Teach me to take my position in prayer, in faith, and in authority.
Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to fight without You.
Help me to raise my hands when I want to give up—and to surround myself with those who will lift me up when I’m tired.

I declare that You are Yahweh-Nissi—my banner, my defender, my victory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
